Abundance

Natural Regional Park of Vercors - Between the northern Alps and Provence

: 17/08/2006

Thyme and edelweiss comfortably grow in Vercors. This thick white limestone flagstone which extends between Grenoble and Drôme and culminates at Grand Veymont at 2341 meters high, offers spectacular landscapes and an exceptional diversity of flora and fauna. It is also the kingdom of formidable local produce.

Wind, rain and streaming dug Vercors in as many striking sites. Gorges, points, vertical rock faces favourable to climbing, it is the mark of the limestone ranges and, this one, does not escape the rule. The climate is rigorous and varied, can you imagine, between Grenoble and Drôme in the south, there is enough to admire a great botanical richness. There are more than 1800 vegetable species, among which, 80 are protected and 61 varieties of orchids, such as the orchid of Spitzel or the root of coral.

It is also in Vercors that blooms an abundant fauna and especially, the 6 big cloven hoofed beats of France: chamois, stag, roe-deer, moufflon, wild boar and ibex, which is very rare in a same location.

The land of Vercors is so hospitable that the reintroductions of species occur as well as possible. More than 300 ibexes, reintroduced from 1989, live and reproduce in the Vercors range and the fawn-coloured vultures (more than 90 now) have reinvested Diois. The concept of hospitality is thus not a vain word in Vercors. The inhabitants are particularly active there and the initiatives abound.

It is there, for instance, that "Fermades" are organized each year by farmer-cooks who propose an unusual and festive discovery of their exploitation. With snacks and dinners prepared with farm products and, each time, they offer a convivial spectacle called "spectaculinaire". As an innovation, within the context of the vintage 2006, 5 spectacles for young public will be organized, because children adore the rural world and the countryside in general.
